Step 9: Ask Forgiveness and Distribute Prasad

Dhanteras Rituals and Traditions
Beyond Dhanteras puja at home, several traditional customs are followed in many Indian households.
These practices come from regional traditions and popular religious beliefs. Families may observe them according to their own customs.
Buying Gold, Silver or Metal Utensils
Many families buy gold, silver, brass or copper utensils on Dhanteras.
Newly purchased items are traditionally placed before Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber during the puja.
Some households follow the custom of filling a new vessel with water, rice or sweets before bringing it into the home.

Sowing Dhaniya Seeds
In some households, coriander seeds offered during the puja are later sown in a pot.
The growth of the seeds is traditionally considered a symbol of prosperity.
Lighting Diyas
Diyas are commonly lit at the entrance and around the home on Dhanteras.
Many families follow the tradition of lighting 13 diyas, associating the number with Trayodashi, the 13th lunar day.
Buying a New Broom
Buying a new broom is considered auspicious in some regional traditions.
It symbolically represents cleanliness and the removal of poverty from the household.
These practices are customary expressions of faith and are not guarantees of financial prosperity.
Mistakes to Avoid During Dhanteras Puja
While preparing for Dhanteras, consider the following common precautions and traditional practices.
- Missing the muhurat: Prepare the puja items early and begin within your city’s recommended evening window.
- Bringing a new vessel home empty: Some families follow the custom of filling new utensils with water, rice or sweets.
- Skipping Lord Ganesh worship: In many traditions, Lord Ganesh is worshipped at the beginning of the puja.
- Lighting Yama Deepam inside the house: The traditional lamp offering to Yamraj is made outside the main entrance.
- Lending money or giving away salt and sugar after sunset: Some households avoid these activities on Dhanteras as a customary belief.
These customs vary between families and regions and should not be treated as universal religious requirements.
